Jon Reid, one of Tourism Media’s photographers, was recently in New York and captured some stunning photos of one of New York’s newest and most amazing buildings.
The Oculus, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in Lower Manhattan, was officially opened to the public on Thursday, March 4th. It replaces the PATH train station which was destroyed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The glass-and-steel structure was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to look like a dove in flight and is designed to bring light down into the subterranean rail station and shopping centre.
According to Jon, the Oculus was a joy to photograph, even though the weather was miserable on the day he was there.
“I’ve been a fan of Calatrava ever since Tourism Media had me covering the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia in 2013,” he said. “Almost every country I visit has an iconic design by Calatrava so when the Oculus started making the news, I knew I wanted to check it out. I happily spent more than 2 hours just exploring the interior and could have spent longer. As you can imagine, security was tight and I was approached more than 10 times by guards wanting to check my credentials.”
