When Matt Officen, Tourism Media’s photographer and Image Library Specialist, headed to Alice Springs recently, Matt Cassidy and Nick Joy asked him to get some footage of Uluru while he was in the area.” (OK so maybe more than 1500 kilometres isn’t so close but at least it is the same state…)
Matt is delighted he made the detour. “I have never seen landscape like it,” he says. “It’s hard to put it into words until you’ve actually seen it yourself, but it seemed so infinite – it was almost frightening.”
Although he had been told Uluru was enormous, he hadn’t really appreciated its size before he saw it. “As we approached by bus, even when were 20 or 30 kms away, it seemed huge but as we reached it, we realised it is monumental. To give you some kind of perspective, it is taller than the Eiffel tower.”
Matt was so astounded by the vibrant colours and the way the landscape changed depending on the time of day that he ended up staying there for almost 24 hours, capturing sunrise, sunset and the stars as they wheeled across the sky in the middle of the night.
When he isn’t out and about photographing the world, Matt is in charge of ensuring all of the images we produce adhere to our strict quality standards.
